Jo Lepine, signature voice of left field folk pioneers The Owl Service releases her first solo album ‘As The Blackbird In The Evening’

Recorded at home over the course of 3 years, the album is a collection of 8 traditional and original songs set to spare, haunting arrangements, including ‘The Selkie O’Sule Skerry’, ‘Grey Dolphin’ and ‘Tam Lin’.

Lepine’s work with The Owl Service has earned her a cult following; her singing has been described as a clear, mesmerising voice that transports the listener.

In this album she returns to her first love, that of story telling. Here, the traditional realms of love, death and betrayal are eulogised in rich, clear and compelling songs, her unique voice always at the centre. The album is full of contradictions-warm and austere, intimate yet mystical.

The album features an original ballad ‘Grey Dolphin, or the Earl of Shurland’s Horse’ composed with Lepine’s long time collaborator Gavan Kearney, based upon a local Kentish folk tale. Kearney’s hypnotic guitar accompaniment creates a wonderful sound picture which surrounds Lepine’s poetic lyric, perfectly evoking the lonely Kent marshes.

Featuring the playing of the late Philip Martin on hurdy gurdy and vocals, Charles & Magnus Dearness on trumpet & trombone, Ben Kelly on tuba and Gavan Kearney on guitar.

The CD comes in a gatefold card sleeve, featuring original artwork by Celia Harvey and contains an 8 page booklet with photographs and comments in an initial edition of 100 autographed copies worldwide.
